Aromatherapy: aro-ma-ther-a-py - noun - The use of essential oils and natural aromatic botanicals for psychological and physical well-being.
Aromatherapy, or essential oil therapy, refers to a range of traditional, alternative or complementary therapies that use essential oils and other aromatic plant compounds. Aromatherapy is normally used through inhalation or as a topical application. Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy. It does not provide a cure for diseases, rashes or illnesses, but it can SUPPORT conventional treatment of various conditions such as infections, stress, and other health problems. Other support benefits of aromatherapy include easing anxiety and depression, boost energy levels, speed up the healing process, eliminate headaches, boost cognitive performance, induce sleep, strengthen the immune system, reduce pain, improve digestion, and increase circulation.
The allure of essential oils often lies in the desire to connect the body and mind. Our mental and physical well being are more intrinsically linked than we frequently suppose. Harmony in the body provides peace in the mind. Lavender oil is an excellent example of the connection between body and mind. It is used to soothe anxiety and holistically treat minor burns and cuts. At the end of a long week, is there anything sweeter than the moment your head hits the pillow? Wintergreen may be the perfect antidote to tired days and overworked muscles.
What many first notice when exploring essential oils is the aroma. The fragrant notes captivate the senses and can spark emotions or feelings. Smell is the most sensitive of the five senses and studies show that nearly 75% of emotions are prompted by scent. Traveling internally through the olfactory cells, aroma interacts with the limbic system and delivers an emotional response.
Even essential oils that are absorbed by the skin exude an aroma that interacts with the limbic system. Take a second, and try to recall the smell of your childhood bedroom, favorite perfume or first Thanksgiving. Do any emotions arise? The feelings evoked by essential oils are extraordinarily powerful.
Refreshing kitchen surface cleanerAdd 2-5 drops Lemon directly to a damp sponge. Use it to wipe counter tops and cutting boards to help combat bacteria and germs.
Simple kitchen sink scrubCombine 5 drops Sweet Orange, 5 drops Lime, 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide in a small bowl and stir. Apply the mixture to the inside of the sink and scrub. Rinse with warm water.
Laundry freshenerAdd 5-10 drops Grapefruit and/or Lavender to a small, slightly damp washcloth; place it in the dryer while drying towels, sheets and clothes for a clean, fresh aroma.
Trash can deodorizerAdd 1-3 drops of Grapefruit and Peppermint and onto a cotton ball and place it on the bottom of the trash can to help eliminate odors and germs.
Toilet rollsPlace 3-6 drops Lavender and/or Sweet Orange on the inside of the cardboard tube of a roll of toilet paper. The aroma will fragrance the bathroom with every turn.
Grout scrubCombine 10 drops of Lemon, 1 cup baking soda, 3 tbsp liquid dish soap and 1 tbsp white vinegar. Mix well, then place a small handful of the scrub on an abrasive sponge and clean grout.
Simple carpet deodorizerCombine 12 drops Lavender with 1 oz baking soda. Mix well and sprinkle the mixture over carpets. Let sit for 15-20 minutes, then vacuum.
Cozy aromatic fireplaceAdd 5 drops Fir Needle to a medium-sized, dry log. Leave for at least 15 minutes and make sure the essential oil has soaked in before adding the log to a lit fire.
Outdoor furniture scrub sprayCombine 20 drops each of Eucalyptus, Lemon, Fir Needle and 2 tbsp white vinegar in an 8 oz spray bottle. Top off with water. Shake well and spray patio furniture liberally, clean and scrub with a heavy rag.
Fridge refresher Combine 5-10 drops Lime, Grapefruit, and/or Lemon to a small bowl of water. Wipe down the fridge or freezer with the water.
Ant & pest awayAdd 2-4 drops Peppermint on a cotton ball and place in locations where you have had problems with ants or mice. The strong aroma will disrupt scent trails and discourage them from coming back.
Shoo fly donÃƒÂ¢€Ã¢â€žÂ¢t bother mePlace 2 cups dried flowers or potpourri in a decorative bowl. Sprinkle 10-15 drops Lavender and Eucalyptus over the dried flowers. Place in an area where you want to ward off flying insects.
Sponge refresherSprinkle a few drops Lemon, Lavender or Sweet Orange on your sponge. Place in the top rack of your dishwasher to disinfect and leave a fresh aroma.
General purpose & disinfecting cleaner Add 20 drops each Eucalyptus, Lemon and Fir Needle, along with 1 oz white vinegar to a 2 oz spray bottle. Fill to the shoulder of the bottle with water. Shake well before each use. Can be used on glass surfaces, windows, kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces and inside your refrigerator.
Bathroom refresherAdd 1-5 drops Grapefruit and/or Lavender to a cotton ball and place behind toilet.
